Virginia,

Your comments are right on. Pepsi also has an interesting opportunity to keep the campaign "fresh" (no pun intended) by empowering the winners to tell their ongoing stories AFTER the cash grant is awarded. If they could assemble a smart social media strategy and network of partners (disclosure: admittedly Changents would be perfect for this) to propagate the stories of these "change agents" as they unfold in interesting locations and communities around the country, they could catalyze the second wave of public support by using crowd-sourcing to pull in skills and talent from individuals who could help the winners take their projects to the next level. That would be really putting "social" into CSR.

Since I haven't gotten the chance to discuss this topic in the workplace, the dinner table is where it's at! :) I find stories to be incredibly effective in warming people up to social media. For older generations, one of their big concerns is health care, so discussing some of the things that hospitals around the nation have been doing with social media to proliferate information about the industry and improve patient care has been effective in helping them open up to the idea of using social media for their own lives.

Also, I would imagine that if you can find ways to connect these new tools for communicating with more traditional means of communicating that might help open some eyes.

Last resort? Tell 'em they can keep tabs on their kids with social media. ;)

I love the questions you pose from all sides of the issue, and in fact may need to get them tattooed in some inconspicuous place for easy reference- palms, perhaps? It's easy to take yourself for a spin up the primrose path, based on something that sounds like it's beneficial to the blogger.
But if it, at some point, doesn't give value to readers as well, they (completely legitimately) begin to question the value of their presence. Thank you for posing this in a way that's so free of hysteria and hyperbole that it takes guesswork out of the process.
